Wow I knew when I first blasted a tumor whilst riding in a simulated blood steam in Anatomica that it was a very powerful tool. The fantastic news is Anatomica will now have a permanent home on the American Cancer Society’s island.

Friends Fighting Cancer media release:
“How do you fight back against something so small that even the most powerful microscopes have difficulty seeing it? How do you empower people to visualize themselves getting healthier? ”

For the 2009 Relay For Life of Second Life, Friends Fighting Cancer chose to answer these questions with a full-sim build called “Anatomica: City of the Hero Cell.” This interactive environment featured displays that introduced visitors to the lead player in the body’s immunity system; the White Blood Cell. It also personified threats to the body like bacteria, viruses and, true to the meaning of Relay For Life, cancer.

But more than just learning about these allies and threats, Anatomica gave visitors the opportunity to take the fight to cancer in a literal way. By donning protective gear and boarding a special submarine everyone who came to the site could go on patrol with the Hero Cell and use various weapons like the Chemo-Missles to destroy those threats. Bacteria couldn’t stand up to those weapons. Nor could the free-floating cancer cells or tumors that were to be found within the blood stream.

More than 6000 people visited the Relay For Life sims this year and many of them found Anatomica and spent some time fighting back. Countless survivors and caregivers now have an image in their minds of watching cancer cells explode and die. As one survivor said after spending more than an hour inside Anatomica, “That is good medicine!”

And while Relay is designed to be an overnight event, the value of Anatomica will endure long after the sims have been taken off line. Friends Fighting Cancer is proud to have been invited to install all of Anatomica as a permanent feature of ACS Island, the American Cancer Society’s headquarters in Second Life. The vision and purpose of this build will continue to help people for years to come thanks to this partnership between ACS, the RFL of SL and Friends Fighting Cancer.

If you donated time, talent or money to this year’s Relay For Life then you are part of the reason why 2009 broke all previous records. Overall, almost $275,000 USD was raised. Friends Fighting Cancer added over $11,000 USD to that total! On behalf of every one of your Friends Fighting Cancer, thank you for the gift of life and for helping to celebrate the undeniable fact that we are indeed One World with One Hope.

Stay tuned for more updates including an announcement of the Grand Re-Opening of ACS Island featuring “Anatomica; City of the Hero Cell!”
End.

INSIDE EACH OF US IS A TINY WORLD

I spent the most wonderful afternoon exploring the FFC campsite at the RFL in SL. Our campsite encompasses an entire region and has been brilliantly built by talented creators. Zander, Lauren, Felix and Grafix not only created a beautiful looking camp but made it educational and therapeutic too.

Pictures and information from the camp will tell the story:

Inside each of us is an amazing world

Inside each of us is an amazing world

“There is a world within each of us…a world where the smallest things wield incredible power…a world where nothing is bigger than HOPE!”

Welcome to Anatomica: City of the Hero Cell!!

Welcome to Anatomica: City of the Hero Cell!!

We begin this adventure by meeting the Hero Cells. Our Hero Cells are white blood cells, the key players in the body’s immune system.

And we continue to learn and train for our Hunt for the Nemesis!

Wow you have to see this to believe it!

On July 18th Relay for Life in SL takes place. The track and team camps span 37 sims, that’ s over 1.5m square metres of virtual real estate. Team camps range from small plots of land to an entire region of just over 65,000 square metres. Friends Fighting Cancer have a whole region called Anatomica, which I’ll show you more of later.

Each square is a 65,000 square metre region

Each square is a 65,000 square metre region

Each of the 120 plus RFL Teams has spent weeks and months planning their build (camp), each with a special theme to help raise awareness and funds to fight cancer.

The cancer survivors and carers lap will follow a pathway around all these regions. When I first joined the FFC team I was told stories of past walks, listened to tales of the friendships made and the tears of joy and sadness that were shed. And the strength, peace and comfort people found in the company of those who understood. Yet still I didn’t register for the walk of honor.

Why was I reluctant to stand with the other survivors? Well, I believed that what you thought most about you would attract into your life – so I wasn’t going to focus on a disease I had been treated for and left behind me. Sheesh even my poor doctors have to drag me in for checkups! It’s amazing how forgetful you can become when you want to 🙂

Working and meeting all the passionate, strong and caring people these past couple of months. Listening to others who had taken the same journey and especially those who are still fighting their own battle, gave me the courage to sign up to walk that lap as a survivor.

In the company of these heros and heroines I discovered that cancer was not something you just accepted as part of life, something you got, dealt with and if you were lucky put behind you. I learned that by sharing we grow stronger, we give hope and most of all we do NOT have to accept cancer as part of life – we CAN fight back.

One person dies of cancer every four seconds in this world – every four seconds of every day.

Seems my birthday is going on for a long time this year. It began last week when an early pressie arrived from the UK 🙂 Continues this week as we climb toward the birthday wish goal.

And two days ago we held the coolest birthday party in the virtual world of Second Life celebrating all our friends July Birthdays. We gathered from all over the globe to laugh, sing, dance and chat on Star Journey Island.

Dancing in the clouds

Dancing in the clouds

Guests of honor included Richard Geer (Starman Heron), author of Star Journey, yours truly and team member Lisa Ellis (Beda Wilder).

Our friends, Sammy from Germany. Claudine and Otto from the USA had created a fantastic surreal party area where we could dance in the clouds or under the sea. Tamra Hayden (Tamra Sands) entertained us for an hour streaming in with her beautiful voice.

I love the magic and sheer creativity of this virtual world (Second life), whatever you imagine you can create it. It’s a place where a meeting of hearts, minds and common goals is more important than if you were young or old, fit or unwell, rich or poor.

Whoot! Lookie here - no breathing gear

Whoot! Lookie here - no breathing gear

Sort of reminds me of cancer, that too is a great leveler and brings together a truly diverse group of people. I have met and continue to meet so many amazing and wonderful people which is just another reason why I know we will reach my birthday dream.

CELEBRATE
Almost four years ago I first heard those scary words – “You have advanced breast cancer.” Swallowing deeply, blinking fast refusing to allow tears to fall, I looked at the doctor and said, “ok what do we need to do?”

From that moment onward a whirlwind of activity took over, hospital, surgery, chemotherapy, said goodbye to long blond hair, saved a fortune on hair products, discovered I have a cool shaped head and topped the lot off with radiation. One hell of a year and even worse for my family, but it passed and I’m still here!

I was given a 50% chance, I’m still here and I’m not the only one! On the 18th of July there will be a track full of international survivors and carers powered by their computers. As we walk that first lap of celebration, I dream of the dollars dropping in from the website to double our teams efforts. We have already raised over $7500 USD in Second life and my birthday wish is to match that and celebrate another blow to the enemy.

You can save lives now – celebrate someones birthday and donate here: http://tinyurl.com/lmkbz2
